WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) – Significant automakers and industry suppliers on Wednesday urged Congress to move promptly to pass $52 billion in subsidies for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing, in accordance to a letter observed by Reuters.
A persistent scarcity of chips has disrupted the automotive and electronics industries, forcing some companies to scale again manufacturing.
The chief executives of General Motors, Ford Motor (F.N), Chrysler-mother or father Stellantis (STLA.MI), Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O), Magna Worldwide (MG.TO), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI.O) and senior U.S. leaders of Toyota Motor (7203.T), Honda Motor (7267.T), Hyundai Motor (005380.KS), Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), Mercedes Benz (MBGn.DE), BMW (BMWG.DE) and Nissan (7201.T) urged Congress to act before long.

“If the U.S. is to stay a leader in automotive innovation, we need to make the strategic, forward-wanting investments today needed to improve the ability and resilience of our domestic and regional semiconductor provide chains,” the letter said.
The letter warned “presently, the automobile field is facing considerable generation losses stemming from capacity worries across the world wide semiconductor provide chain” and added “numerous automakers have been compelled to halt manufacturing and terminate shifts in the United States, with major repercussions for their staff and the communities in which they run.”
The funding contains $2 billion to incentivize output of “mature node” semiconductors employed by the automobile marketplace and in professional medical products, agricultural equipment and some nationwide protection purposes.
Congressional leaders met Tuesday to check out to hammer out a compromise.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Greater part Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday urged swift action and said they considered there was no rationale the monthly bill really should not by Congress in July.
The Senate legislation, handed in June 2021, bundled $52 billion for chips subsidies and approved a different $200 billion to strengthen U.S. scientific and technological innovation to compete with China.
